A SELECTION OF ELEVEN PAINTED AND DIGITAL ILLUSTRATIONS
A series of both Painted and Digital Illustrations that were inspired by Virginia Woolf's Novel Orlando.
Orlando is a novel by Virginia Woolf, that was first published in 1928. It is a fantastic historical biography, which spans almost 400 years in the lifetime of its central character.
Orlando is the extraordinary story of a person who lives through five centuries, first as a man and then as a woman. The novel opens with Orlando living as a young nobleman in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. His interests are swordsmanship and poetry. He becomes a favorite of Queen Elizabeth and is bestowed with the royal order of the garter. The Queen plots an impressive ambitious career for him. Lands are given to him and houses assigned to him. He was the son of her old age. Queen Elizabeth instructs Orlando to never to grow old and indeed he is given the gift of an eternal life. Woolf's novel follows him through the centuries, across the globe, through all sorts of adventures and discoveries. One morning Orlando wakes to find that he has mysteriously metamorphosed into a woman. Orlando remains the same person, but in a woman's body. The adventure continues with Orlando adapting to life as a woman. She experiences some complications and hardships because she does not retain the same rights or place in society as a man. She continues to travel and gains a unique understanding about life. Over a course of three centuries, Orlando ages only twenty years. The novel closes in 1928 with Orlando as an enlightened and worldly thirty-six-year-old woman.

"NIGHT ICE FAIR" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON WATERCOLOR PAPER WITH DIGITAL OVERLAY
-Excerpt from the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf:
" It was at night that the carnival was at its merriest. For the frost continued unbroken; the nights were of perfect stillness. The moon and stars blazed with the fixity of diamonds, and to the fine music of flute and trumpet, the courtiers danced. As the river was lit up, the strangest transformations took place. Various churches and noblemen's places showed in streaks and patches as if floating on air. At a distance, one could gradually discern little figures breaking off from the vast crowd, spinning hither and thither like gnats on the surface of a river. Above and around this brilliant circle like a bowl of darkness pressed the deep black of a winter's night."

"ORLANDO PERSONA" - 34" x 25" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS
-Excerpt from the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf:
An English merchant ship, was already under sail in the harbor about to return to England.
Orlando, broke off another pearl from her necklace, to pay her passage. With some guineas left from the sale of the tenth pearl on her string, Orlando bought a complete outfit of such clothes as women then wore. It was in the dress of a young Englishwoman of rank that she now sat on the deck of the "Enamoured Lady".

"ORLANDO TIMEPIECE"- 26" x 32" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS
-Excerpt from the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf:
Time,
though it makes animals and vegetables bloom and fade with amazing punctuality,
has no such simple effect upon the mind of man.
The mind of man works with equal strangeness upon the body of time.
An hour,
once it lodges in the element of human spirit,
may be stretched to fifty or a hundred times its clock length ;
on the other hand, an hour may be accurately represented
on the timepiece of the mind by one second.
For Orlando ,
life seemed of prodigious length.
Yet even so, it went like a flash.
But when time stretched the longest,
moments swelled and he seemed
to wander alone in deserts of vast eternity.

"AERIAL OVER BIRMINGHAM"- 32" x 38" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS
In the eyes of Orlando, England has considerably changed.
"Absurd trundicated carriages, without any horses , began to glide about of their own accord. "
"There was an odd sort of weather . The horizon had changed.
Clouds had shrunk into a thin gauze and the dryness of the atmosphere brought out the color in everything."
"The very fabric of life now is magic. Here I rise through the air; I see men flying - but how it's done , I can't even begin to wonder."

"FROZEN FAIR"- ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS PAPER
London enjoyed a carnival of the utmost brilliancy.
The new King seized the opportunity of his coronation to curry favor with the citizens.
He Directed that the river (which was frozen to a great depth) be swept, decorated and given
all the semblance of a park or pleasure ground, with arbors, mazes, alleys and drinking booths.

" ICE FAIR" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON WATERCOLOR PAPER
-Excerpt from the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf:
" The ice fair became a center of utmost brilliancy in England. Great statesmen , in their beards and ruffs, dispatched affairs of the state under crimson awnings. Admirals strode up and down the narrow pathways, glass in hand, sweeping the horizon and telling stories of the Spanish Armada. Lovers dallied upon divans spread with sables . Frozen roses fell in showers when the Queen and her ladies walked abroad. Here and there burnt vast bonfires of cedar and oak wood, lavishly salted, so that the flames were of green , orange and purple fire. However fiercely they burnt, the heat was not enough to melt the ice."

"LADY ORLANDO" - 28" X 38" - ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS
-Excerpt from the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf:
"Orlando, who believed in no immortality, could not help feeling that her soul would come and go forever .
The room shone like a shell that has lain at the bottom of the sea for centuries and has been crusted over and painted a million tints by the water - it was rose and yellow, green and sand-colored. It was frail as a shell, as iridescent and as empty.
The whole of her darkened and settled, as when some foil whose addition makes the round and solidity of a surface is added to it,
and the shallow becomes deep and the near , distant; and all is contained as water is contained by the sides of a well .
So she was now darkened, stilled and become,
with the addition of this 'Orlando';
what is called , rightly or wrongly , a single self, a real self. And she fell silent."
